Love or Hate Your Work

We all work hard. We all give so much of ourselves to our workplaces. It feels good to work hard, doesn’t it? Or does it?

I talk to professional people every day who are working their guts out to accomplish good in work. They want to feel good about what they’re doing, but often don’t feel good. business-19156_1920

Why is it that so many people are NOT enjoying their work? In my 18+ years of HR related work, there definitely seems to be more people who don’t love their work. That’s sad to me because we all spend quite a bit of our lives doing work. That means most of our time is spent unhappy. Breaks my heart to think…

I wanted to understand why people spend most of their time unhappy, so I asked around and here’s what I heard most commonly:

  • “I don’t feel like I have an option to change.”
  • “I don’t want to go back to school and get another degree in order to change the type of work I’m doing.”
  • “I don’t have a college degree and make too much money to go do what I really want to do.”
  • “I have no idea what else to do for work, so might as well continue doing what I am doing.”

I suppose there are enough other things in life to find love and enjoyment around, so that’s why many people are willing to put up with a lack of love for their work.  Maybe they find more love and enjoyment in their family, hobbies, religious observation, etc. I really hope they find a way to have some joy in their work. Life’s too darn short to not enjoy all our roles!

So What do YOU Think?
