You’ve been promoted – congrats! All your hard work has paid off and now you’re moving along in the company.
You do realize that you didn’t get there alone, right? Typically you’ve worked with other people to accomplish goals together as a team.
Even though you’re being promoted, I highly recommend that you recognize your team that helped you to get to where you are going.
So, before you pack up your desk and move to the other side of the building, here’s a few recommendations that you do first:
- Thank your old team. This can be done with bringing in a treat and gathering them all together and expressing gratitude to the group. If there are special people who made a significant impact on you, perhaps write them a thank you note or get them a small gift of appreciation.
- Close the loop. Is there anything your old teammates need from you. Questions about a customer? Files to be cleaned up? Think about what impression you want to leave as you move onward and upward.
- Check back in. Before you make the transition, put a reminder on your calendar to check back with your old team in one week, and in one month. Let them know you’ll be in touch. That shows pro-activity on your part to answer any outstanding questions.
I know you’re excited about moving to another department, but keep in mind that you don’t want to forget about the people who probably had something to do with you getting the promotion. Besides, you never know when you’re going to work with them again.
They’ll remember your gracious exit and proper manners. Plus, it just feels good to do the right thing by communicating with your former team mates.
Good luck with your new gig! And good luck with your new team!
